Voluntary Norfolk CEO thanks Volunteers

A comment piece from Voluntary Norfolk’s CEO, Michael Kitching, thanking volunteers for all their endeavours.

Each year, Volunteers’ Week (which this year is running from 2nd-8th June) is a chance to recognise and celebrate the incredible contribution of volunteers across the UK. Whether it’s helping a neighbour, supporting NHS services, mentoring young people, or looking after the local environment, volunteers play a vital role in making our communities stronger, healthier, and more connected.

Volunteers truly are the unsung heroes of society. Their dedication helps bridge gaps in services, bring comfort to those who are lonely or isolated, and support individuals when they need help the most. In Norfolk alone, thousands of volunteers give their time, energy, and know-how freely every day. The impact of this generosity is not just emotional and social; it is also financial. National estimates suggest that volunteering contributes over £18 billion to the UK economy annually. In Norfolk, this translates to millions of pounds’ worth of value added to health, social care, and community services.

Activities happening this week to thank volunteers and promote volunteering

Voluntary Norfolk is proud to be part of this nationwide celebration and is taking the opportunity to thank our amazing volunteers in a variety of ways throughout the week. We will be hosting a series of events, including an awards ceremony, local coffee mornings and garden parties, so that our volunteers can come together to share stories, enjoy a well-earned cuppa, and be recognised for their important contributions to all our lives.

We’re also thrilled to announce the return of the Volunteer Extravaganza, taking place on Thursday 5th June from 10am to 3pm at The Forum in Norwich. This vibrant event is sponsored by Aviva and brings 70 charities, voluntary groups, and social enterprises together with members of the public to celebrate volunteering and promote the many ways people across the county can get involved. So, whether you’re a seasoned volunteer or simply curious about opportunities in your area, the Extravaganza is the perfect place to connect, learn, and be inspired.
