Support for Young Carers this #CarersWeek and beyond…

Carers Week 2025 – Supporting and standing up for Young Carers
Carers Week 2025 runs from 9–16 June, and this year’s theme is “Caring About Equality”. That means making sure all carers – no matter their age – are treated fairly and have the same chances as everyone else.
At Young Carers Matter Norfolk (YCMN), we believe young carers deserve to be seen, supported and celebrated. Young carers are children and young people who help care for someone in their family who has an illness, disability, mental health condition, or drug or alcohol problem. They might help with cooking, cleaning, looking after brothers and sisters, or giving emotional support.
Caring can be hard, especially when you’re also trying to go to school, spend time with friends, and take care of your own health. Many young carers feel left out, lonely or stressed — and that’s not fair.
That’s why, this Carers Week, we’re working hard to raise awareness and make things better.
Activities we’re putting on to support young carers this week and beyond…
School Assemblies
We’re visiting schools across Norfolk to run assemblies all about young carers — who they are, what they do, and how classmates and teachers can help. We want more people to understand the pressures young carers face and how schools can be “Young Carer Friendly”.
Youth Group Training
We’re also working with youth clubs and groups to train staff and volunteers, so they know how to support young carers too. Groups who complete the training can call themselves “Young Carer Friendly” – and help spread the word even more.
You can sign up for our training event here: Young Carers Training for Youth Groups
⚽ Young Carers Sports Day – Thursday 12 June
We’re teaming up with The Benjamin Foundation and West Norwich & Dereham School Sports Partnership to run a special sports day just for young carers. There’ll be football, cricket, baseball, martial arts, mindfulness and more! It’s a fun way for young carers to relax, make new friends, and realise they’re not alone.
While the young carers enjoy themselves, school staff can take part in training and networking to learn more about supporting carers in schools.
☕ Carers Forum Coffee Morning – Friday 13 June
We’ll be at Priscilla Lodge, meeting other carers and talking about the challenges they face – and how we can work together to make life easier for young carers in Norfolk.
Supporting young carers in the weeks to come
At Young Carers Matter Norfolk, we believe that caring should never mean missing out. Our team gives support to young carers and their families, helps them with school, builds their confidence, and gives them chances to speak up and shape the future.
This Carers Week, we invite you to stand with us and help create a fairer Norfolk – where young carers are recognised, respected, and given the same chances as everyone else.
