Finding work in West Norfolk: Alona’s Story

Our Chances team has already helped many people to find training, volunteering opportunities and eventually work in West Norfolk. Alona is one of the clients who have crossed paths with our team in King’s Lynn. Her journey is definitely inspirational!

Our Chances team has helped find Alona training and work in West NorfolkAlona arrived in the UK to escape the conflict in her country in May last year. However, trying to find work in a new country had its challenges. Luckily, Alona found our Employment & Skills Team in West Norfolk. As she said: “I knocked on all doors to find some proper work for myself so I could continue teaching people, help them find balance of life. The Employment & Skills Team with Voluntary Norfolk opened the door and helped me to find myself here in the UK.”

Our team soon assisted Alona with creating a CV and identifying retraining opportunities. With the team’s help, Alona and her family could take one step closer towards independence. Jason Slack (Alona’s Chances Advocate) explains: “We helped Alona find and get onto a Zumba instructor training course and introduced her to the Freebridge Placeshapers Team with a proposal to host Zumba sessions within the Discovery Centre.”

The Placeshaping Team liked the idea and were happy to help Alona setup her classes. They said “We were impressed with Alona’s energy and enthusiasm and were only too pleased to accommodate sessions soon to start at the Discovery Centre. We can’t wait to welcome the community in to take part.”

Alona mentions that “Zumba is a fantastic way of keeping fit and having fun. It’s an exhilarating, effective, easy to follow, Latin-inspired, calorie-burning dance fitness party that’s moving many people towards joy and health. The first 6 sessions are free so come and give it a go.”
